WIRE Team Quarterly Planning
At the end of June, the WIRE team got together to do some planning for the third quarter. We talked about individual financial goals, some team housekeeping items to keep the team functioning well as we grow and we each picked three items to focus on in the next three months.
I used to set only yearly goals and while I still believe yearly goals are a good thing, I find that quarterly goal setting to be more effective. For me, there’s a temptation to think of a year as so big, it can feel daunting. And so long, it can feel like it’s not urgent to start now. But when you think about what you can get done between now and the end of September, that feels more manageable and more urgent.
In typical working mom fashion, Tony and our dog Rosie joined our team meeting due to our regular sitter being sick. Being a working mom has forced me, naturally a control freak, to begin to accept the things I cannot control and get just a bit better at being more flexible. And the fact that Emma was happy to hold Tony for most of the meeting definitely helped.
Curiosity: My Theme for this Quarter
As I mentioned, I’m trying to get better at accepting the things I cannot control. Being a mom has really shattered my illusions about how much control I have because, as thoroughly delightful as our adorable baby boy is, he is also absurdly inconvenient and doesn’t care at all about clocks or calendars or goals or benchmarks or task lists. I know this sounds like a duh moment. Doesn’t everyone say how much work babies are? But I really was so unprepared, it’s embarrassing.
And so, how does a recovering perfectionistic control freak workaholic stay sane? Enter, curiosity.
Curiosity came to my rescue recently as I was neurotically ruminating on how many things feel uncertain, how little I can control, how imperfectly I feel like I’m currently showing up as a mother and a wife and a business owner.
I sat wondering what goals to set and are goals even relevant when I’m sleep deprived and covered in spit-up and what if I fail and am I good at anything anymore and should I even try to lose the weight and where is my focus and motivation and what’s the point anyway…
And a little voice interjected “What if you let go of all that and just got curious? Let’s just try something and see what happens. Maybe you’ll like it, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll fail, maybe you’ll succeed. Who cares? Let go of the outcome, and just try it. You can always pivot if you want to.”
And it felt so freeing that I decided, we’re just going to try it. And so my focus for myself this quarter is to stay curious. And my mantra is “let’s just try it and see what happens.” So, I don’t know where curiosity will take me between now and the end of the summer but, let’s just try it, and we’ll see what happens.
